Artist Statement

My art is rooted in my rural Minnesota life as much as I am. While weeding the garden, I will pause to notice the patterns of light that chase each other across the shades of green. While washing the dishes, my eyes will wander to the scene outside my window and the abstract quality of intertwined branches against a blazing sky can move me to a feeling close to ecstacy. This natural world is the base of my artisitc expression and I need to communicate the awe I feel, bringing my wonder to others in a "Be Here Now" moment.

Watercolor is my passion, chosen at first because of its ease of packing up and moving around as well as it doesn't require a lot of room. Of course, I soon fell in love with the vibrant colors and the way the pigment works with the water, almost as though the paint were alive. I really love to paint, both outside on location and in the studio. I take really awful photographs and print them out really small to use as reference guides but prefer to remember the feelings generated in me by the immediacy of the scene itself when I paint.
I feel that I am surrounded by magic that transcends and transforms. It changes chores into rituals that make ordinary life so meaningful. This magical essence is what I hope to distill into my artwork; bringing forth the extraordinary out of my ordinary life.
